Control

Poison Ivy can be difficult to control once established. One of the best and safest means of control is to utilize a systemic herbicide treatment that will translocate throughout the vine, providing control of the rhizomes as well. Glyphosate or tryclopyr (tryclopyr reportedly works better) can provide good control and should be applied in the fall before leaf drop for best results. Mulching or covering plants with a tarp will also effectively suppress growth. Mowing is not recommended unless operator is protected from plant sap and oils that may be sprayed from the plant. All parts of the poison ivy plant contain an oil, urushiol, which causes the allergic reaction.
