THE ANCIENT WINERY OF
“CHÂTEAU DE COLOMBIERS”
19th century rural engineering...
The ancient “Château de Colombiers” winery
on the banks of the Canal du Midi testifies to
a certain type of viticulture that created the
wealth of a few great Béziers families. It is
remarkable for its majestic framework which
was inspired by an overturned hull, built in
1870 by the Compagnons Charpentiers du
Tour de France (Gustave Eiffel school).
An exceptional place to visit!
A video, a scale model and an aerial photograph of the
Via Ensérune sites are available to the curious.

THE OLD COOPERATIVE WINERY OF LES
VIGNERONS DU PAYS D’ENSÉRUNE
The first cooperative wine cellar
in France, built in 1905!
The winegrowers of the time were united in
their unshakeable determination and socialist
ideal to free themselves from the domination
of wine traders. That is why the Maraussan cellar
is also famous for the visit by Jean Jaurès on 1
May 1905, the day after an epic gathering of 15,000 people in
the Béziers bullring. Its age and the special historical context
of its development make it a strong regional symbol that quite
naturally led it to being placed on the supplementary inventory
of historical monuments on 25 May 2001.
