GLOSSARY
Agroforestry
Agroforestry means the new and historic prac-
tice of associating trees, farming and/or animals
on the same plot of land, either around
its edges or in the field.
First belonging to Phillipe le Bel at the end
of the 13th century, then to the Arnoye,
Rouch, Lort and Sérignan families, the
property was finally bought by the Feracci
family in 1968. The vineyard is mentioned
from 1375, so it was difficult for Laure
and Pauline, who took over the reins,
not to perpetuate this ancient heritage.
These two young women had flown the
nest in search of other horizons, but
Perdiguier called them back and they
returned as if magnetised by this magical
place. An agricultural estate since time
immemorial, grain and aromatic herbs
(thyme and oregano) are grown here,
and the practise of agroforestry creates
a biodiversity that is beneficial for the
protection of the vines.
Most of the production on the domaine is
organic and the two young women have
every intention of extending this to their
vines. Their 7 vintages are all IGP Coteaux
d’Ensérune and Pays d’Oc. The family
favourite is, unsurprisingly, the “Les filles
de Perdiguier” (the Girls of Perdiguier), in
both red and rosé. It must be said that the
year it was created the red was awarded a
gold medal at the Concours de Bruxelles.
In addition, the bottle label was created by
Pierre Cornudet, a Béziers artist-painter.
Even more importantly, in 2014, the
newspaper cartoonist, Plantu, created a
limited-edition (the stock has sold out)
label for this vintage, for the Hérault Trait
Libre Festival.
Art really is a second nature in this castle
of Perdiguier. Every wooden barrel where
wine is “growing” is painted, decorated by
amateur painters. A “must -see”, actually.
During the summer season, the
reception room, which hosts business
seminaries, lends its walls to some
fine visual art exhibitions, including
40
a recent retrospective on the work of
internationally renowned artist Isabelle
Duret-du-Jarric. To discover the Domaine
Perdiguier, walks in the vineyards and
gourmet tastings all can be arranged by
appointment.
There are annual events like the flower
and garden days or the Hérault farm
circuit in April, for lovers of nature and
culture alike. This is a place where the
Heritage Days truly come into their own!
