BRAZIL AT THE WORLD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Brazilian National Team
will compete at Indoor World
Athletics Championships 2018 with
seven athletes. The 19th edition of
the Championship will be played
from March 1 to 4 in Birmingham,
UK. Among the team's highlights
are the Olympic pole vault
champion Thiago Braz da Silva and
the leader of the 2018 World
Ranking in the triple jump, Almir
Cunha dos Santos.
The history of World Indoor
Championships begins in 1985,
when the IAAF organized a pre-
event in Paris, France, on January
18 and 19. 319 athletes from 69
countries participated and Brazil
had five representatives.
Twenty-four nations put athletes
on the podium. One of the medal
winners was João Batista Eugênio
da Silva, who took the bronze in the
200 m. In Indianapolis, in the
United States, in 1987, the Indoor
World
Championship
began
officially.
Until the ninth edition, also in Birmingham 2003, the Championship was played
in the odd years. From Budapest 2004, the Championship went to the even years, to
not coincide with the World Athletics Championship, disputed outdoor, in the odd
years.
Since Paris 1985 competition, the Brazilians have won 15 medals: four gold, five
silver and six bronze medals. The champions were José Luiz Barbosa, in the 800 m, in
1987; Fabiana de Almeida Murer, at the pole vault, in Doha, Qatar, in 2010; and Mauro
Vinícius Hilário Lourenço da Silva (photo), in the long jump, in Istanbul, Turkey in 2012
and Sopot in Poland in 2014.
