world horse welfare day EQUINE CHARITY GETS A BOOST AT SMITH’S LAWN World Horse Welfare Chairman Barry Johnson addresses the diners in the Clubhouse during the WHW charity lunch W orld Horse Welfare (WHW), the leading equine welfare charity made a welcome fourth visit to Smith’s Lawn last summer. Friends of the charity and the Club gathered in the Clubhouse for a delicious lunch and hotly-contested charity auction before heading out to watch the polo. WHW also brought several of their four- legged friends which were a big hit with everyone at the Club. During the morning WHW CEO Roly Owers highlighted the charity’s work. The action on the field was a semi-final for the 12-goal Phoenician Cup, won by John Gunn and Andrew Dechet’s Inspirit/Kildare. They defeated Mark Wadhwa’s Oakley Court 7-5. The second semi-final, played later in the afternoon, saw a win for Chris Mathias’s Clarita. They beat Kassem Shafi’s Shalimar 7-6. WHW Chairman Barry Johnson presented the prizes, including the Polo Magazine’s Most Valuable Player award, which went to Inspirit/Kildare’s Manuel Plaza, and a Polo Times Best Playing Pony prize.
