W
orld Horse Welfare (WHW),
the leading equine welfare
charity made a welcome
fourth visit to Smith’s Lawn last summer.
Friends of the charity and the Club
gathered in the Clubhouse for a delicious
lunch and hotly-contested charity auction
before heading out to watch the polo.
WHW also brought several of their four-
legged friends which were a big hit with
everyone at the Club. During the morning
WHW CEO Roly Owers highlighted the
charity’s work. The action on the field was
a semi-final for the 12-goal Phoenician
Cup, won by John Gunn and Andrew
Dechet’s Inspirit/Kildare. They defeated
Mark Wadhwa’s Oakley Court 7-5. The
second semi-final, played later in the
afternoon, saw a win for Chris Mathias’s
Clarita. They beat Kassem Shafi’s Shalimar
7-6. WHW Chairman Barry Johnson
presented the prizes, including the Polo
Magazine’s Most Valuable Player award,
which went to Inspirit/Kildare’s Manuel
Plaza, and a Polo Times Best Playing Pony
prize. For more information on the work
