Going for the Gold
To some, going gold means being the winner—the fastest, the most competitive, or the one who fought
the hardest. For Girl Scouts, going gold means earning the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, the Gold
Award. This award recognizes girls in grades 9-12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through
sustainable and measurable Take Action projects that address important community needs.
For many, the leadership and organizational skills, as well as the sense of community and commitment
that comes from “Going Gold,” set the foundation for a lifetime of active citizenship.

The highest award in Girl Scouting celebrated 100 years in 2016!
It was the celebration of a century this past November at the Gold Award
100th Anniversary Reception. Girl Scout alumnae who earned the highest
award in Girl Scouting joined family, friends, and community supporters
at the Pittsburgh Opera for an evening of festivity and Girl Scout pride.
The room was electric with strong, persevering women who have
improved their communities through compassionate service.
While guests enjoyed live music and photo ops on the red carpet, the
centennial event also increased public awareness around the prestige
and importance of the Gold Award. It united five generations of women
who earned the highest award in Girl Scouting through a special pinning
ceremony that affirmed, “We are all Gold!”
The event was chaired by Angie Stengel, Gold Award recipient and
executive director of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and
Pain Management.
The capstone of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, the Gold Award
is an incredible achievement. Reception attendees were energized to
inspire a new century of Gold Award recipients—our leaders and
change-makers, dedicated to service and making a difference.
