As ten years since the opening of GSIS passed, many cross country seasons have
followed along with it. In the lower secondary division, students come and go and
eventually graduate junior high. Over the past ten years, many junior high students have
moved into high school and joined the varsity team, never forgetting where they began and
leaving a long-lasting legacy in the junior high level.
When Coach Kaiser was asked how the varsity runners influence and leave a legacy
behind, he replied, “What I really see is that the older students that are on the team kind of
encouraging the younger students just to be discipline and to maintain their efforts.”
In the previous year, the majority of the team was made of 8th graders. Coach
Kaiser said, “It was influential seeing those ladies who were the 8th graders last year, move up to
9th grade and go onto the varsity team.”
But the varsity runners were not the only ones influencing others. Last year was
the first time for the elementary division to have the opportunity to run cross country. Occasionally, elementary students will run with Coach Kaisers team. Jaime Suh says, “It is important to
show the elementary students how we should act in middle school and what
choices we need to make [when running]”, such as “showing them that
you have to keep running [constantly]”. This is Jaime Suh’s 2nd year of
cross country and she is planning on trying out for varsity next year.
Now that the season has ended, Coach Kaiser fully
believes that his lower secondary runners are capable of leaving a memorable legacy, just
like many other varsity runners.

What was your most
memorable race?
“The most memorable race that
I had was our first race at GSIS
because it was the first race I
ever did and I felt accomplished.”

1. In the beginning of the practice, Arnav
Deshpade and Joshua Laroche stretch
their quadriceps. Stretching the quadriceps is
important before running because the runners cannot
avoid working them while running. 2. Cindy Kim and Kaitlyn Lee
laugh as they take a walk on the field after their run. The cross country team
always take a walk around the field after their runs to cool down and recover. Cindy
Kim and Kaitlyn Lee are one of the fastest female runners on this team, finishing their 2.5K run in
12.57 minutes (Kaitlyn Lee) and 14.28 minutes (Cindy Kim). 3. Jamie Suh holds on to Gina Park’s arm as they
take a walk after the run. The runs are extremely tiring for the runners as they take a route outside of the school. Gina
Park only attended one race, the 3K run at TCIS and finished off with a best time of 23.10 minutes. 4. Jamie Suh collapses on the
floor after her run around the school. The runners on the team push themselves to their limits every practice to perform their best at each
jamboree. She attended two races this season, her best time was at KIS when she and the 2.5K in 15.25 minutes. 5. Coach Kaiser talks to Tatiana
Laroche and Yuki Sugihara about their running time. It is important for the runners to keep track of their times so that they can improve and have a faster run
the next time around. Both of them attended two races this season, their best time was received at KIS when they ran the 2.5K.
