Artwork hangs on the auditorium walls. Bright lights illuminate the stage. Christmas music permeates throughout the crowd. Reveling in this dynamic atmosphere, students play on their instruments and sing. The elementary students danced, sang, and played Christmas carols on their instruments. The music created by the cellos, bells, xylophones, recorders, and drums fused the auditorium with a more dynam ic, energetic mood. The audience reacted positively to the performances, encouraging Song List ‘ Ten Little and applauding the performers. Riker Pownall, a kindergartener, explained that he “took three weeks to practice playing [The Little Drummer Boy] on the drums at home by himself.” Apart from song, dance, and instrumental performances, the first and second-graders also enacted a one-act play depicting the birth of Jesus. Yuliia Korkishko, a second-grade student who played Mary, said that the play expanded her knowledge of the Bible. For instance, she “learned that Mary gave birth to Jesus.” Fifth-grader Jinju Hughes said that her favorite part about performing at the concert was getting to be with her friends and playing instruments. “We ‘ Do Angels’ (PK) ? ’ (2) ‘Little Drummer Boy’ (KG) ‘ Chime In ’ (1P) ' Twinkle Twinkle Christmas Star' (1W) ‘ Silent Night ’ (2) ‘ ’ (3-5) 6 7 _GSIS Yearbook-ES_Part 1.indd 39 ‘ Dreidel played the xylophones and on the xylophones we played ‘The Fifth Noel’ and on the bells we played ‘Away In A Manger,’” Jinju remarked. Moreover, the fourth-graders in Mrs. Anderson’s class played the recorders and drums to “Coventry Carol.” They also sang and danced to “Dreidel Spin.” They stood in two lines, holding hands and moving from side to side. Nischay Mahesh said that he liked the recorder piece because he likes “moving his fingers” when he plays the recorder. Nischay considers this concert a victory in his musical career. “I am proud of everything I’ve performed,” added Nischay. The concert took place on Dec. 3.
