SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT Perspectives BOARD MEMBERS OF THE GREATER SACRAMENTO ECONOMIC COUNCIL SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE BUSINESS CLIMATE IN THE CAPITAL REGION. INTERVIEWS BY CHRISTINA KIEFER SUSAN ROHAN MAYOR, CITY OF ROSEVILLE 1 What are some of the incentives that make the Capital Region friendly for business? Strong regional cooperation makes it easier for businesses to find just the right location in our area. Having a business location in Roseville is obviously our first choice, but we know that Roseville benefits from new businesses coming to and being successful in the region as well. The region offers expedited permit processing, facilitated permit processing programs (such as the PASS program), fee deferrals and fee financing programs. 2 How would you describe the business climate in the Capital Region? We’re business friendly across all the regional jurisdictions. It’s predictable, it’s consistent and affordable. The region’s business climate has shifted significantly from individual jurisdiction-centric to regional collaboration. We are all working for regional successes and to improve regional issues like transportation and water supply. ROGER NIELLO CO-OWNER AND CORPORATE SECRETARY, THE NIELLO COMPANY PHOTO: NOEL NEUBURGER 1 What are some of the incentives that make the Capital Region friendly for business? We have very strong economic development assets that are incentives that make for a business-friendly region. We have a highly skilled available workforce, world-class institutions of higher learning, a top-rated airport, very affordable housing, office and industrial space costs and reasonable energy costs provided by a very business-friendly utility. And, as the proposal developed for Amazon’s second headquarters demonstrated, our local jurisdictions are willing and able to offer aggressive direct incentives to attract the right kind of job generators. 2 Why do you like having your business in the Capital Region? The Capital Region’s economic climate makes for a strong consumer market for our retail automobile business. In addition, our area has a high-quality labor force developed by good schools. And this region is a great place to live and play with its affordability and superb recreation and entertainment amenities. December 2018 | comstocksmag.com 77
