I recently attended a conference called the Business
Transition Forum where some interesting factoids were
offered. According to a Canada-wide BDC survey
undertaken to understand the perspective of business
buyers, less than 10 percent of business acquirers would
buy an unprofitable or declining profit business. It seems
there’s little appetite for turnarounds. Most buyers
want stable or growing businesses. Not great news for
business owners in Alberta who’ve been dealing with a
challenging economy for the past three or four years.
The conference mostly focused on sale-of-business
issues, the transaction process, potential deal breakers,
due diligence, and the like. While this is all good, it
struck me that in Alberta, with our commodity-price-
driven (read cyclical) economy, many businesses will
struggle to show the sustained growth buyers desire, yet
the statistics are that many owners are ready to sell.
I’ve dedicated this issue of Growth Stratagems to offer
some suggestions on the process of how to create
sustainable growth. This is tricky because of the variety
of businesses in the market; however, I do feel there is
a process to creating sustainable growth. I hope you
collect a few ideas you can use in your business. As
