WELCOME TO GROWTH
STRATA•GEMS MAGAZINE
The holy grail for everyone leading a company is to have
a sustainable competitive advantage. As evidence of this,
the most successful investor of all time, Warren Buffet,
became that way through diligently searching for it in his
acquisitions. Yet with the speed and frequency of disruptive
change, what advantage is sustainable? Today’s technical
or geographic or early mover advantage could soon be
leapfrogged by a competitor or completely disrupted by a
new approach. Industries are being impacted. As the leader
of your company what can you do? What shouldn’t you do?
I’ve come to believe that your only sustainable competitive
advantage is the work environment you create at your
company. I believe people are intrinsically motivated by
the opportunity to do great things and have fun doing it.
Southwest Airlines is a great example of a company that
has consistently grown over a long period in a tough,
competitive industry. They’ve done it by creating a work
environment that balances productivity with being a
great place to work. As their CEO Herb Kelleher noted
their competitors can copy everything Southwest does,
but they can’t copy their culture, their esprit du corps.
Ordinary people, working in a great environment, can do
extraordinary things. This is why I believe it’s important for
you to intentionally create a work environment that balances
productivity with being a great place to work. Like the two
wheels of a bicycle you need them both. In this issue of
Growth Stratagems Magazine, I offer practical suggestions
on how to create a great work environment. I hope you put
some into practice.
