Jay was reluctant to attribute their success to the “woman touch”. She said, “Men or women, it’s the
same. Maybe men do not have this finer touch that women are said to have.” Catherine and Jay started
managing the station since September 1972. They have won other prizes in BP competitions, including the
BP national decoration contest in 1973. By being a part of encouraging women to join the workforce in the
early 70s, in addition to raising their image as competent workers, BP helped Singapore increase its
workforce population and also drop the social stigma towards women coming out to work.
