1960s
After achieving independence in 1965, Singapore
was finally on its own. Without any natural
resources, Singapore as a new nation experienced
much uncertainty. High unemployment was a major
problem that needed to be resolved quickly to allow
the economy to grow. Political and social unrest was
still rife in the country with riots and other violent
acts occurring. The sixties presented a challenging
start for Singapore.
