Regimen Preparing to have “the good look” has a varying approach among the Westerns and the Easterners. An emphasis on respect for the body, skin and hair, represents how Eastern people treat themselves to tender, love, and care. This is why this culture prefers bare faced to light retouches which is contradictory to the Western cultures’ reliance on cosmetics and exposure to chemicals to improve body, skin, and hair conditions. Routine One factor that these two cultures have in common: the amount of time spent on beauty routines is never too long. Although Western beauty routines include exfoliation, moisturising, skin conditioning, and cream application every once in a while, spending more time on applying make – up on an everyday basis is considered a priority. Unlike in the East, most people still dedicate to extensive daily regimens that sometime take up to a 10 – step skincare system that emphasises on their tradition of lifelong beauty. Products Although both cultures have a common hype for the green movement, they still have their differences with their approach and acceptance towards beauty products. It has been observed that while Eastern people are more well – versed with the use of diverse, organic, and rare ingredients in their skin and hair care products (like mushrooms, fermented herbs, and snail slime), Western people rely more on formula engineered products which have tried – and – tested to produce their desired results. As beauty is an accepted – and more so, expected – form of expression everywhere, understanding the pressures that people face just to look “beautiful” is rather important. Over time, this generation will continue to get more and more exposed to different trends and stereotypes from the media and their peers. This is why the true measure for beauty shouldn’t be based on differences, but on one’s self – confidence and individuality. Now that’s beauty! 32 33
