DEN OF INIQUITY
For the next thirty years The Den changed very little, although the demolition of the New
Cross Stadium in 1975 led to the club briefly toying with the idea of teaming up with
Asda to redevelop the site to include a new 25,000-seat stadium. Ironically
those plans floundered when the supermarket giant chose to build a store
at the site of one Millwall’s former grounds, at East Ferry Road on the Isle
of Dogs, instead.

The Den was undoubtedly one of the most intimidating venues ever to host modern day
football with the atmosphere contributing to a record 59 home League game unbeaten
run between 1964 and 1967. Unfortunately the ‘intimidation’ sometimes went further
than that, with the ground holding the record for being closed by the FA on more occasions than any other; in 1920, 1934, 1947, 1950 and 1978.
