THE FIGHT TO SAVE TOP FIELD
A number of Hitchin clubs picked up the baton thereafter, the most successful being Bedfordshire League side Hitchin Blue Cross Brigade, so named after a local temperance society. They latterly played at Hitchin Grammar School, whose pitch had a small grandstand.
Having lost the use of the Grammar School pitch in 1928, Hitchin Blue Cross folded, leaving the Hertfordshire town without a senior football club. Those interested in starting a
new town team met up at the since demolished Angel Vaults in May of 1928, and resolved
to bring back the glory days of the old Hitchin club. Ironically, considering their current
predicament, the man elected as the chairman of the newly formed Hitchin Town was a
trustee of the Cow Commoners, who was no doubt helpful in securing Top Field as the
new club's home. Though without a stand, Top Field had continued to host football following Hitchin
