David Gamston of York writes: My house is built on part of Fulfordgate, which was York
City’s ground from 1922 to 1932. I have so far drawn a complete blank in my efforts to
track down any photographs of the old Fulfordgate ground, and I wonder if you might be
able to help?
York City v Barrow at Fulfordgate, October 1931
York City enjoyed only a brief stay at Fulfordgate, playing there from their formation in 1922 until
moving to their present Bootham Crescent ground ten years later. It was a typical lower division
set-up for the time, with a low, pitch length grandstand on one side, a similar looking covered standing enclosure on the other side and uncovered banking at both ends. The record attendance at
Fulfordgate came in 1931 when First Division Shefffield United pulled in 12,721 for an FA Cup replay. Situated a mile to the south of the city, and poorly served by public transport, York sold Fulfordgate for housing development in 1932, moving to the more centrally located Bootham Crescent
ground most recently used by York ܚX
