SPECIALIST MOWERS
always been a priority for us, and being able to maintain the greens without taking them out of play fits that approach.”
The VGR TopChanger addresses another part of the maintenance programme, using high-pressure water to aerate the soil and introduce sand into the resulting channels, helping water infiltrate the soil.
“ Our greens are approximately 500 square metres, and with the VGR we can get two and a half tonnes of sand into a green,” Peter said.
“ The point is that you can keep it in play. We tend to do three or four greens a day at our own pace, which gives us the flexibility to work around the weather, take breaks when needed, and spend more time on areas that require extra attention. Being able to
set our own schedule makes the process more manageable and means we can keep making progress without feeling rushed.”
Peter’ s twin daughters, Catherine and Claire, operate the machinery alongside a labourer, making the TopChanger part of the club’ s family-run approach to course maintenance.
These treatments support the wider investment in drainage and course conditions that Peter believes encourages repeat visits.
“ We don’ t use mats, temporary tees or winter greens,” he said.
“ People come because we have good greens, it’ s fairly dry, and it’ s affordable. That’ s how we got return business.”
The partnership began when
greenkeeper John Bond introduced Peter to Campey during the company’ s early years. Practical support, including repairing an early second-hand mower, helped build confidence that has lasted through subsequent investments.
“ John Bond took me to Campey because I couldn’ t afford new machinery, and Campey were in their infancy,” Peter recalled.
“
“ John gave me a lot of help, and Richard Campey gave me a lot of help. When we had a problem with that first mower, they put it right. Anybody who puts things right, you trade with.”
