THROUGH THE LENS

For Piet, grain farming is not just a profession, but something that runs in the family’ s veins. Piet du Plessis is the sixth generation of Du Plessis farmers on De Draai, just outside Porterville in South Africa. Together with his wife, Kathy, he farms in a world where wheat, livestock, wool and guavas complement one another, and where each season brings its own set of challenges.
Although wheat remains at the heart of the farming operation, De Draai is not a one-track farm. On the neighbouring Gelukwaarts, guavas are also cultivated, and it is here that Dawid Floors loads crates full of fruit once the harvest has been brought in. The guavas are mainly destined for processing, with only a smaller portion sold locally as fresh fruit. It is a diversification that helps broaden the farm’ s income in an industry where one can seldom stand on one leg alone.
