Contreras, who played o-line last season, has fully transitioned into the receiver role. Speaking on his group, Contreras praised the track star speed of his fellow wideouts and their strength. Reiterating the fun he plans to have, Contreras is pleased to be able to connect with his family who play 11-man as well.
For Duncan, the quarterback position features the most change in the transition. As a leader, Duncan isn’ t afraid to ask questions if he’ s struggling with learning the offense. Outside of some initial nerves, Keene’ s quarterback and many others share the mentality of staying level-headed.
Defense
Much like the offense, Stepp said it’ s too early in the process to say how it’ ll look defensively. Mentioning Benkim as one of the leaders of the group so far, it’ s a broken record when he speaks on how fast the players have absorbed the information.
“ It’ s a breath of fresh air,” said Stepp when seeing the kids discuss and debate over what they learned.
Expectations come in different forms
for the Chargers. For Duncan, it’ s simply about getting one percent better each day. Contreras wants to see everything put together that was taught by the coaches.
Moure, on the other hand, has high expectations for the team.
“ I don’ t think we should lose any games,” said Moure confidently.“ If we prepare ourselves the right way, there’ s no reason why we shouldn’ t win every game.”
Stepp cares about seeing success, regardless of the number of wins. He doesn’ t expect to struggle in that department; however, he’ s already seen the success before the first game.
As an outlaw and no opportunity of winning a district title, Keene’ s schedule includes many private schools and some regular UIL schools.
“ We’ ve got nine games, the goal is 9-0.” Stepp said.
Through all the optimism, the biggest challenge for the Chargers is the live setting of an 11-man game, Stepp noted.
Yet, the excitement level within the program may outweigh any challenges along the way.
