Grey College Boat Club Newsletter - Issue 1 Michaelmas Term 2016 1 | Seite 4

well and will look to close the gap between Grey and Aidan ’ s at the next race . to his commitment that the 2nd VIII was coxed well by Luke Myers , having never coxed before at the start of term , to coxing one of the biggest and most challenges races of the region . We look forward to his continued training under the guidance of our new Coxes Captain .

YORK SMALL BOATS HEAD The week before Rutherford the majority of the men ’ s and women ’ s squad decided to rest up albeit for one rower . Will Hamlyn travelled to York to compete in the Nov 1x category once again . Cheered on by a couple of supporters that had accompanied him down from Durham , he looked powerful and composed as he crossed the finish line . His practise paid off and he finished 2nd in his category – beating a much more experienced Hatfield single crew .
RUTHERFORD HEAD Whilst Rutherford ( International ) Head is a mere pop down the road for GCBC , the weekend saw clubs from as far as Aberdeen in North Scotland to down South in London descend upon Newburn to race in frosty weather conditions of -2 ° C in the biggest head race of the season so far . This was also the first opportunity for our two men ’ s 8 ’ s to race – one of only two college clubs to do so .
Our dedication to training certainly paid off . The battery failure of the cox box did not stop our senior cox Amy Carter from screaming down the boat drawing every single shred of energy from her rowers as she took some superb aggressive lines . “ Hang and bang ”, being a new crew favourite call ! The VIII finished as the fastest IM3 DCR 8 + and third fastest college crew overall surprisingly only 0.7 seconds behind a seasoned IM2 St . Cuthbert ’ s crew . Despite some last minute changes to the crew and steering issues with Eric , the 2nd VIII placed well and finished above the 2nd VIII of St . Hild & Bede . It is a testament

A single women ’ s IM3 4 + represented Grey in a narrow domestic competition between Hatfield and Butler colleges . They had a strong row and finished in 2nd place in their category beating our boathouse partners . “ The best head race I have competed in ” as quoted by Lizzie Powell ( 3 seat ) as they came off the water feeling positive . This result nicely finished off a string of excellent performances from women ’ s crews in GCBC . Both men ’ s and women ’ s crews are continuing to undergo their own personal training over the Christmas break to come back faster , better and stronger in the Epiphany term .
SENATE CUP The revamped DCR-run event was a chance for some enjoyable friendly competition between the senior crews of Durham colleges following on from Novice Cup the previous weekend . In the competition , crews underwent a time-trial down the race course before side-by-side regatta racing took place based on the trial result . The Grey men placed 6th and 9th out of 18 and the women placed 3rd and 10th out of 14 . Overall , the less intense regatta-style racing offered a respite from the head race training and was an apt end to the term .
