Low-carbon SMEs are “engine
room” for UK export growth
New report identifies huge potential if the right support is given

he UK could triple exports
T of low-carbon goods and
services to create a £30bn
market by 2020, according to a
new report by the Carbon Trust
for Shell Springboard.
In response, Energy Secretary
Ed Davey described the UK’s lowcarbon SMEs as the “engine room”
for future export growth.
The report shows that lowcarbon SMEs are more than twice
as likely to export as SMEs in other
sectors and 67% are already
selling to emerging economies.
The study identifies a £15bn
annual opportunity in four
markets, the MUSTs – Mexico, the
UAE, South Africa, and Turkey.
