We ’ re almost there , folks . The light at the end of the tunnel is coming into view . The scent of fresh blooms , the hum of lawnmowers and the sound of allergy season approaching . Spring is almost upon us .

Actually , winter comes earlier than Dec . 21 for me . It ’ s more of a mental thing – like a creeping , invisible cold that takes over in early November . The Winter Blues – a condition I am way too wellacquainted with . The sun seems to have forgotten its job entirely , acting coy even or outright coquettish . Days get shorter , nights get colder and before you know it , you ’ re sitting under a blanket with your dog , wondering why oh why the warm weather left you .
Groundhog Day has come and gone but let ’ s be real here , does anyone actually believe in that fuzzy faux prognosticator Punxsutawney Phil anymore ? It doesn ’ t matter if he sees his shadow or not because – breaking news here – GROUNDHOGS DON ’ T PREDICT WEATHER . The best compliment I can give ol ’ Phil is when he sees his shadow , it more than likely means six more years of disappointment for Dallas Cowboys fans . Sorry , not sorry .
The weather ’ s been unpredictable lately . One day it ’ s a brisk 50 degrees and the next we ’ re kneedeep in a cold snap with wind chills so frigid I half expect a polar bear to waddle by my window . And don ’ t get me started on snow . A dusting of snow hits and suddenly , the entire state of Texas shuts down . It ’ s like the apocalypse has come but with a slightly more festive air . Some neighborhoods get a good coating of ice while others just a few flakes that cause mass confusion and some truly spectacular traffic jams .
Now , let ’ s be honest . We Texans aren ’ t built for winter . We ’ re raised on 100-degree summers , sweet tea and the understanding that 60 degrees is sweater weather ( and 50 degrees is practically an arctic blast ). I ’ m not ashamed to admit that I start questioning my life choices every time the thermometer dips below 40 .
But as much as I gripe about it , there ’ s a certain joy in surviving the winter , especially when you know the reward is coming soon . Spring ’ s right around the corner and with it , the promise of longer days , warm evenings and the first hint of bluebonnets poking up along the highways .
So , hang in there , Texas . We ’ re almost at the finish line . Although Mother Nature can be a fickle dame so let ’ s hope we don ’ t have to pretend we know how to shovel snow again .
