Another person in Greenville who ’ s highly involved in the arts is Micah McBay , who wears not one , but at least three ( and sometimes ) more hats as he juggles being manager of the Greenville Municipal Auditorium , working as the city ’ s director of community engagement and being the artistic director for Greenville Theatre Works .
For the most part , McBay finds that a lot of people assume his jobs are more glamorous than they actually are .
“ As community engagement director , a lot of people think of me as hosting fun city events , shaking hands with residents and posting feel-good stories on social media , when the job actually involves me answering endless emails , coordinating with city departments , listening to business owners , and juggling 10 different projects all at once while keeping within budget and time – but I do work with a fantastic staff .”
McBay says that similar assumptions are made about his post as manager of the GMA , since he gets to book big-name acts ; however this often involved chasing down contracts , negotiating with promoters , managing staff and volunteers , and dealing with all sorts of last-minute issues .
Finally , as an actor and artistic director with Greenville Theatre Works , McBay reveals that much of the “ magic ” people see on the stage relies on “ finding affordable ( performance ) rights to shows , scheduling rehearsals around everyone ’ s conflicts , handling actors ’ crises , marketing productions , and somehow making magic happen with limited funds and volunteers .”
