gaming style tends to lend itself to a friendly , cooperative environment , in which more experienced players will often make sure to give new players ( or noobs ) extra support while learning the game .
“ It ’ s mostly about letting everyone have fun , because our group has players ranging greatly in experience ,” Nevarez said .
“ Mostly , I don ’ t try to get my players ’ characters killed ,” he added with a smirk . “ So , I ’ ll give hints to new players who need quite a bit of help .”
More and more in recent years , groups of friends like the ones that meet at Brigandry Games have been welcoming an increasing number of new players into their tabletop RPG sessions .
This rise in curiosity about these types of games is due to a variety of reasons . One of them being the widespread popularity of massively multiplayer online roleplaying games ( or MMORPGS ) like World of Warcraft and the Guild Wars series , which sometimes leads to players being curious about the tabletop “ roots ” of those games .
“ I used to play Elder Scrolls ( a series of roleplaying video games ), but I used to have a co-worker who talked about tabletop games a lot ,” said Travis Caviness , who was DMing a sessions of the RPG Pathfinder at Brigandry Games . “ Now , it ’ s been five years since I started playing tabletop , and I don ’ t even really play video games anymore .”
In addition to spill over from the popularity of MMORPGs , another contributing factor in the current interest in tabletop RPGs is their increased visibility in pop culture . An example of this is the weekly livestreamed online show Critical Role , which features a panel of voice actors ( mostly known for recording English language dubs of Japanese anime cartoons ) as they play an actual session of D & D .
Somewhat similar to Critical Role is another online series Celebrity D & D , which is uploaded to the YouTube / Twitch channel Geek & Sundry . So far , the show has featured a diverse
