As a kid growing up , my first love was baseball .

I loved everything about it . I loved the feel of a wooden bat in my hands , the smell of a new horsehide ball . I loved working lanolin oil into my leather glove to loosen it , making the pocket just right . I remember the ball plopping into a patch of mud or rolling into the neighbor ’ s yard , coming to rest under a clump of dandelions .
For me , all this was a springtime ritual .
To this day when I think of spring , I still think of baseball . But now I ’ m also reminded of so much more that ’ s associated with this season of renewal .
I think of blossoming trees , of biting fish , of tilling earth for a new vegetable garden . I think of people shedding their sweaters and jackets and rejoicing in the longer days and gentle North Texas breezes . I think of traveling and camping and striking out on new adventures both near and far . Recently , I traveled to one of those “ near ” places , which is less than a mile from the Hunt County line . It ’ s a place outside the noise and bustle of the city that takes you back to an earlier age . On this day , I visited tipis patterned after those once inhabited by members of the Sioux tribe . The tipis I saw , however , are furnished with comfortable beds tastefully appointed with blankets and pillows adorned in Southwestern-style colors and patterns . I found a spot to enjoy a “ staycation ” or an easy day trip . You can read my account of the Arrowhead Tipi Resort in this edition of Greenville Life .
If dining out is more your thing , peruse the magazine and learn about Ted and Dana Grieb ’ s popular restaurant Fatto a Mano , a name that in Italian means “ handmade .” Brad Kellar has the story behind Chef Grieb and his wife Dana and their decision to open an eatery in downtown Greenville .
As people look for outdoor enjoyment during the warmer days of spring , some want to saddle up and enjoy the pursuit of horseback riding . It just so happens that Greenville is something of a hot spot for leather tooling and saddle making . Travis Hairgrove talked to a few of this area ’ s seasoned leather artists and craftsmen whose work blends time-honored traditions with their creative minds .

Then go out and enjoy spring !
