Music shop in Commerce offers treasure trove of gift ideas for musicians
If you have a musician in your life to shop for this Christmas , the good news is that there are several routes to take as far as gift ideas . And while some may think they have to spend thousands of dollars on a fine instrument for their musical loved one , the truth is that musicians are constantly in need of supplies that are much less expensive .
Whether it ’ s guitar strings , drum sticks , reeds for woodwind instruments , valve oil for brass instruments , or a microphone stand ; these and similar items can make for useful , thoughtful gifts . In addition to instruments and accessories , things like prepaid music lessons or studio time might also be appreciated by amateur and advanced musicians alike .
In Hunt County , a business that offers all of these things ( plus the expert advise of the multiple seasoned pros on its staff ) is Brick Row Music in Commerce .
Opened late in 2020 by two seasoned Nashville professionals , singer-songwriter and Grammy Award-winning guitarist Brad Davis and longtime musical collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Joel Weaver , the small music shop on Main Street in downtown Commerce strives to meet the varied needs of local musicians .
“ For people who play guitar , mandolin , banjo , ukulele , bass , or anything with strings on it , I have a pretty good idea of what kinds of supplies they need , but I don ’ t really know much about horns and wind instruments , so for starters , I reached out to professors in the ( Texas A & M University- Commerce ) music department and asked them about what supplies they require their students to have ,” Davis said .
“ I also learn a lot from students about what they need ,” Davis continued . “ For instance , I might have a kid come in here and say they need a ‘ No . 3 ’ reed for their saxophone , and I may call their professor to make sure we stock the right things .”
In terms of stock , Brick Row Music mostly carries musical accessories and supplies . However , the store does sell some instruments , many of them on consignment . They also have a few brands of instruments that they ’ ve found suit the local market well .
“
We had a guy from Rockwall who was here on business who stopped by and we just had a long , friendly chat with him . A few months later , he drove all the way out here to buy a guitar from us and he said it was because we treated him so well .
