Living the Holiday Spirit

FROM THE EDITOR
Hank Murphy

I know a guy who absolutely adores Christmas . Actually , he loves the whole holiday season , but he puts his cheer in another gear for Christmas .

Peter loves it so much that he built a big red metal barn with a green roof and green shutters and green doors . He brings in fake snow and strings lights from every rafter . He fills the barn with vast multitudes of Christmas decorations – bells and lights , holly and wreaths , tin soldiers , snowmen , elves riding toy trains , tubs filled with ornaments , you name it . The entire place smells like gingerbread and carols play in the background . He calls it Christmas Town .
While Peter rejoices in the holiday season , his son earns a living from it . Instead of going to college , Joey , an exceedingly bright young man , bought a tree farm , where he grows and harvests Christmas trees .
I once asked Peter why the holiday season so captivates him . He said it was hard to explain . The holidays have always given him joy , he told me . As a kid , he loved the family gatherings and the time spent with cousins , uncles and aunts , and grandparents . He thought too that maybe it was because people just seemed nicer , friendlier , more generous , and kinder to one another . To him , the holidays were almost mystical that way ; the expressions of peace and fellowship brought him profound joy .
I ’ ll admit that I can ’ t muster Peter ’ s degree of excitement about the holidays . Still , like him I too sense an uptick in goodwill toward others , and I sense a more conducive atmosphere in which a generous nature can flourish . I think that ’ s evident in Greenville and across Hunt County with the work done by legions of anonymous volunteers who give gladly of themselves so others can have a little more comfort and a little more joy in their lives over the holidays .
I hope this holiday edition of Greenville Life also brings you a little joy .
Whatever your take on the holidays , whether you ’ re like Peter or like Scrooge or somewhere in between like most of us , I hope your holidays are safe , peaceful and merry .
