Irwin , he said , " was very energetic . Probably could have cut back on a couple of cups of coffee ."
The actor Barry Corbin , who got his big break on the John Travolta film " Urban Cowboy ," would visit the studio to do voiceovers .
" He was a great guy ," said Thomason . " Down to earth and could tell some of the best stories ."
Thomason also worked through college at the Coppell YMCA , which led him into coaching youth basketball . He also has a love for basketball developed at Archer City , where he played small forward for the Wildcats . He also played wide receiver , running back , quarterback , placekicker , punter and strong safety for Archer City ' s football team , ran the hurdles in track and field and pitched and played first base for the Wildcats ' baseball team .
His original intent in college was to get his teaching certificate and go back into radio . After earning his degree he broke into coaching as an assistant in basketball at Rio Vista and picked up some night shifts at the Fort Worth station KFWR 95.9 ( The Ranch ).
But he eventually left the business and continued his coaching career as an assistant at Joshua and Haltom before getting his first head basketball job at Comanche . He was also the head boys basketball coach at Caddo
Mills before heading to Boles in 2014 . He hasn ’ t given up being in front of a microphone .
" I still mobile DJ on the side and will do some weddings and proms ," he said . " I still do our ( Boles ) prom every year ."
He also fills in as the public address announcer at Boles home football games when needed .
And yes , he ' ll be at work – in the gym – the day after Christmas coaching from the sidelines as the Hornets hold their annual holiday basketball tournament .
" I love it ," he said of his current position . " It ' s the best job I ' ve ever had ."
