ABOUT BUTLER COUNTY

Butler County was formed from Conecuh County and Monroe County by an act passed Dec . 13 , 1819 , by the Legislature while in session at Huntsville . This was the first session of the Legislature of Alabama as a state . The name of Fairfield was first proposed for this county , but was changed on the passage of the bill to Butler , in honor of Capt . William Butler . Butler , a native of Virginia , previous member of Georgia Legislature and captain of Georgia militia , came to Butler County in search of adventure , but was soon killed by Native Americans near Butler Springs on the morning of March 20 , 1818 . As of the 2010 census , the population was 20,947 .

ABOUT GREENVILLE

Greenville ’ s original name was Butlerville . After becoming the county seat in 1822 its name was changed to Greenville , in remembrance of the former locale in South Carolina of many of the original settlers . Greenville is home to one of the premier golf courses in the Robert Trent Jones golf trail , Cambrian Ridge . The clubhouse for the golf course was built on the highest point in Butler County . It is also home to the historic Ritz Theatre and Lurleen B . Wallace Community College . In 2005 , the city was spotlighted on an ABC reality television gameshow . My Kind of Town . Also , a Hollywood feature film , The Honeydripper , by director / writer John Sayles and starring Danny Glover , was filmed in Greenville , Georgiana and Butler County and premiered in 2007 . As of the 2010 census , the population was 8,135 .

ABOUT GEORGIANA

Georgiana , Butler County ’ s second largest town , was originally named Pittsville for the Rev . Pitt S . Milner . The town was later renamed Georgiana after Milner ’ s home state of Georgia and his daughter , Anna . A major tourist attraction for this part of the state is the boyhood home of Hank Williams , Sr . whose birthplace is now a full museum dedicated to the country music legend . Georgiana is home to the county ’ s newest К-12 school building . Georgiana School opened fall 2009 . As of the 2010 census , the population of the town was 1,738 .

ABOUT MCKENZIE

McKenzie , Butler County ’ s third largest town , is named for civil engineer , soldier and member of the Alabama Constitutional Convention . Bethune Beaton McKenzie . The community is located in the southern section of Butler County north of the Butler-Covington county line . McKenzie was born as a depot stop on the railroad line that extended to Andalusia . As the railroad was being built , a settlement sprang up along the line . As of the 2010 census , the population of the town was 530 .
