Route to Greener Malaysia

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob recently announced Malaysia ’ s commitment to be carbon neutral by 2050 , at the earliest . The pledge has made the country have the most ambitious carbon neutrality goal compared to the neighbouring countries .

Following the excellent announcement during the tabling of the 12th Malaysia Plan ( 12MP ), Ismail then shared that Malaysia was bidding goodbye to new coalfired power plants and is on its way to introducing carbon pricing .
He also said the government would implement a cyclical economic model to reduce pollution , waste

Bursa Malaysia to launch the Voluntary Carbon Market generation and reliance on natural resources .
While the 2050 dream and 12MP may look good on paper , the critical part will lie in its execution .
As we ’ re celebrating the government ’ s initiatives for green growth , deforestation and logging are still happening somewhere in the country . A comprehensive and transparent solution is critical .
Whilst the answer to the global temperature rise does not simply lie in tree planting , it also does not entirely reside in carbon intensity reduction . It is known to many that nature restoration and protection are the ways to mitigate climate change .
Looking after the green growth while neglecting the green lungs will affect Malaysia ’ s overall plan to fight climate change .
Since Malaysia ’ s energy transition seems to be on a sound track , addressing the main threats to its forests will be another way to go on the route to a greener Malaysia .
Otherwise , the talk will be proven to be relatively cheap .
