Students with higher levels of intrinsic motivation were more successful and more engaged with course content.
To help students increase motivation in course engagement and success, educators should consider including SDT components of autonomy, competence, and relatedness in their courses to help students become more self-determined in their academic pursuits.
This could include choice-making opportunities on assessments, assigning work that is within students’ levels of competence, yet still challenging enough to maintain interest, and creating environments where students feel comfortable approaching their instructor and peers for guidance and support.
While it may be tempting to emphasize the downside of non-performance, supporting students with their self-determination development, focused on intrinsic motivation for success, will help them engage and succeed in their academic programs.
