I’ve been working as an ALS (Academic Literacy & Skills) teacher for Navitas since January 2020, when I relocated from the UK to embark on a new adventure in the Netherlands. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it hasn’t gone quite as imagined, but it’s been hugely gratifying nonetheless!

Based at The University of Applied Sciences in The Hague, I help prepare students for academic life as undergraduates, support them in writing essays and giving presentations, as well as in the development of other skills. For many it’s their first experience in an English-only study environment, so supporting them to feel ready for their

degree, both in terms of skills and mindset, is key. It was very rewarding last term when students thanked me for my contribution to that!

Despite having taught in several countries, I have never had such a diverse cohort – the students are from such far-flung corners of the world. Most leave home for the first time to come here and it’s a privilege to support them on that journey, which has just begun for our new cohort.
