My teaching journey with Navitas English Government Services started in 2017 as part of the Adult Migration English Program (AMEP); where English core skills are delivered to newly arrived migrants and refugees. Students joining this program come from widely diverse backgrounds – culturally, socially and educationally.

The Covid-19 pandemic has added a new dimension to this challenge. With little notice, teachers and students were required to make the shift from face to face to online teaching with as little disruption as possible. My role in the Digital Innovation team has been to support teachers and students through this process by providing both formal and just-in time training to teachers.

It has been inspiring to witness the uptake of the LMS (Canvas) and the use of many digital tools by both teachers and students. Students who had little experience with any technology are now surprising themselves with their ability to engage with AMEP from a device in their home.

Despite this period being full of challenges and uncertainties, it has changed the way we view ourselves as teachers and learners and provided skills to move forward to whatever the future may bring.

In each issue of GREEN APPLE we feature the profiles of teachers from different locations around the organisation.
