When considering learner-friendly assessment options for the online environment, it’s worth revisiting the various ways in which learning takes place.

• Acquisition – listening to a lecture/podcast, reading from books/websites, watching videos (assessment option: take home/open-book exam).

• Collaboration – discussion, practice and production; taking part in the process of building knowledge (option: problem-solving assessments; or the creation of a webpage or wikis etc.).

• Discussion – articulating ideas/questions and challenging/responding to ideas of others (option: debates).

• Investigation – exploring, comparing, critiquing, and reflecting (option: assessments based on data analysis; research).

• Practice – adapting actions to the task goal; using feedback to improve (option: quizzes; video uploads).

• Production – motivating learners to consolidate what they learned by articulating their current conceptual understanding and how they used it in practice (option: journals; blogs; or have students create an animation/a computer program).

A decision tree can help determine whether it is feasible to incorporate alternative summative assessments into a course. Irrespective of the assessment tasks we select, providing students opportunities to demonstrate their learning authentically, for them to excel, and to gather insights into student performance and progression are our priorities.
