tional clothing . They had not been able to wire home until this point but their mother had already heard on the radio what had happened . The wires were short but expressed a familiar family banter .
Underwood and a few others were rescued that evening by the Swedish yacht , Southern Cross , after rowing incredibly hard in order to get away from the sinking ship that was trying to pull them under . Underwood said in an Athens Weekly Review article published upon her return home that there were 38 women and three men in their lifeboat that was almost hit by the German submarine they “ could plainly hear beneath .” The Southern Cross took their rescues to Galway , Ireland .
The Texas party returned to Scotland where they had to wait two weeks more before leaving on another maritime voyage to New York where they arrived on Sept . 27 instead of the originally planned Sept . 3 arrival .
“ The Scotch people were very lovely and made us at home ,” Louise said in an interview upon returning to the U . S . “ They were very much like the people here in East Texas .”
David Daniels says his mother and aunt never got on another boat once they returned to the United States and rarely did his mom talk about the trip , even though she lived to be 92 .
