For many , their senior year at the Henderson County Livestock Show is the culmination of years of hard work being celebrated for the last time in high school in their home county arena .
The 2022 senior class experienced a rare circumstance , in that each senior that applied for a scholarship received at least $ 1,000 . This has only been done only a few times before and never in such a large quantity as were given this year . Receiving a scholarship is not an easy task . There are multiple requirements during the application process and judges look to see if the applicants followed all of the rules entirely . There is also an interview portion in front of a panel of judges who have multiple years of experience in judging and showing .
Jerry Rogers , a 40-year volunteer with the HCLS enjoys sitting with applicants and getting to know them better prior to them entering the interview room . He says it is very rewarding to tell students that they are being judged on their character and their contributions to the livestock show and as a result are going to be rewarded with a scholarship .
Most seniors will echo what many alumni of the show say , in that the livestock show helps teach responsibility in caring for projects , pride in winning , and humility in not winning .
