March in Athens brings the first true hints of spring, with warmer afternoons, longer days, and a calendar that fills up with gatherings and traditions that bring the community together.
In this issue, we look ahead to one of Athens’ most cherished events: the Athens Old Fiddlers Contest & Reunion, set for April 17 and 18, 2026. Organized by the Athens Old Fiddlers Foundation, the annual event celebrates the enduring joy of fiddle music through live performances and
friendly competition. First held in 1932, it remains the longest-running fiddle contest in Texas and continues to highlight a musical tradition that has long been part of East Texas heritage.
You’ ll also find the familiar elements that make each issue of Greater Athens Magazine a monthly tradition, with puzzles to enjoy and stories that help keep you connected with the people and events around Athens.
As always, thank you for reading.
