very remote , they couldn ’ t walk to the store even if they had money .”
In addition to food they help families with school clothes , utilities , rides to doctor appointments , Christmas presents and the list goes on .
“ We have families living with no electricity or water and families with houses falling apart ,” Hancock said . “ We have families with raw sewage in the front yard and plastic for doors . Heartbreaking stories , but warm smiles and hugs from kids .”
The importance of food extends beyond survival and an immediate need into the students future . Education and learning will help them build a better life for themselves and their future families . Some students suffer needlessly for their parents ’ poor choices through no fault of their own . Teachers are often the front lines for students to ask for help in bad situations because school is a refuge and safe place for the abused and disadvantaged children in the community .
“ God called me to teach , I can ’ t teach them when they ’ re hungry , but I can love them and help ease the hunger ,” said Hancock . “ Many times someone calls wanting to donate something , I ’ ll be thinking how are we going to use this ? God already knows the need before we do . It always happens that way .”
Several local churches , district employees and individuals help BBK deliver hope to students . They primarily focus on Malakoff ISD at this time but have helped other district students within the county including Athens , Eustace and Brownsboro to name a few . Families in need are often identified by fellow teachers , bus drivers , and neighbors . BBK reaches out to see how to help , sometimes they accept and sometimes there is not an acknowledged need .
Save-a-lot Athens helps with the grocery list having items ready for pickup . Backpacks are sent home every Friday with students picking them up on the way to the bus . For those on other campuses bus drivers help deliver .
“ Students don ’ t make fun of those getting bags , in fact , many times it ’ s been a student that helps identify someone needing help ,” Hancock said . “ Teaching is a work of heart , a calling by God .”
If you would like to help BBK provide food for hungry students and work towards the ability to expand their reach , donations and volunteers are welcome . If you want to contribute help or know of a student in need , please visit Building Better Kids on Facebook or call Malakoff High School and ask for Mandy Hancock .
