The program has now invested more than $ 26,000 in scholarships, educational assistance and first responder training opportunities. During the 2025-26 cycle alone, approximately $ 9,000 was committed toward supporting current and future first responders.
The scholarship program is administered by the Caring for America First Responder Scholarship Committee, which includes Debbie Pate, chairman; Barbara Schmidt, secretary; and members Trisha Roy, Sue Potter and Tammy Ellzey.
All funding comes from community donations, local sponsors and annual fundraising events, including the upcoming Second First Responder Scholarship Benefit Car Show scheduled this year for Saturday, July 25 at Elder Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Athens. Last year’ s event showcased over 150 vehicles.
While the event will feature classic cars, silent auctions and family activities, organizers say its true purpose is helping ensure future scholarship recipients have the opportunity to pursue careers dedicated to helping others.
Among Caring for America’ s proudest accomplishments is helping Henderson County become the first county in Texas in which every city earned Purple Heart City designation. Working alongside local veterans, city leaders and community partners, the organization helped champion the effort as a way to ensure Purple Heart recipients and their families are publicly recognized and honored throughout the county.
The organization’ s commitment to veterans also includes its annual Veterans Day celebration each Nov. 11, bringing together veterans, their spouses and the community for a day of recognition, fellowship and gratitude. As a small token of appreciation, all veterans and their spouses are served a complimentary meal.

Caring for America remains focused on a simple but important mission:“ Investing in people who choose a life of service.” For some, that investment begins with a scholarship. For others, it leads to a badge, a fire helmet, a stethoscope or a career dedicated to answering the call when someone needs help most.
