SEASON RECORD OVERALL 5-6 DISTRICT 3-1

Brownsboro BEARS

Brownsboro shines under first-year coach Lance Connot

The Brownsboro Bears opened the Lance Connot era in great shape according to the first year head coach .
Even with a 5-6 overall finish , the Bears competed for the District 8-4A , Division II crown , but lost the Van Vandals , 48-21 to finish 3-1 in district play . Brownsboro lost in the opening road of the playoffs to Pittsburg this year .
“ I thought our kids did an outstanding job of just being really coachable ,” Connot said . “ It takes time whenever you have a new staff coming in with installing new schemes to build those relationships . They were really patient and kept having a good attitude and were very coachable for us . I thought that once we got guys in the right position , we were able to really get the schemes down and that is when we really started to see our success .”
When it came to the district play , Connot said the final year of this current district saw a lot of competition for his football team .
“ I thought it was a really well coached district . Mexia having a new staff coming in there , I thought those kids were really fired up ,” the coach said . “ I know record for Bullard didn ’ t show , but they were really well coached and I thought they were better than what their record showed . Canton is very well coached and we had a big battle with them and then Van winning the district like they did and going three rounds deep was big . It had a lot of talent in there and was a very disciplined district .”
He said getting some time in the spring and then two-a-days saw his group begin to gel at just the right time . He said the 43-32 victory over Bullard Brook Hill was just the time he thought they got adjusted to the new schemes on the field .
“ The last non-district game against Brook
Hill is when we really started to find our true identity and what our team was going to be ,” Connot said . “ We felt like we were finally starting to get guys in the right spots and that is when our team started gelling together .”
He said his first senior group played a huge role in the success of the team and knowing how to get adjusted to a new coach after the departure of Greg Pearson .
“ The seniors were huge and were big for us .” the coach said . “ Especially the guys on our leadership council and that was important for me early on to build a relationship with those guys . I know how important it is to have seniors that you feel close with . I felt like they bought in to what I was trying to do and that just carried throughout our team .”
He said with another full offseason program this year , he is ready to see how the Bears prepare for the 2022 season in a new district .
“ We like all of the guys playing multiple sports ,” Connot said . “ We want to see those guys who can help us win championships and put trophies in the trophy case . We want them to do that for basketball , baseball and track and soccer . The guys in football offseason we will go through our different phases to get them going during the spring . We want them to become a better version of themselves in getting bigger , stronger , faster and more agile .”
When it comes to the future of Bear Nation , Connot said they program is right where they want it to be for fans of Brownsboro High School .
“ I think we are only going to get better and better . Our culture is already changing with such a positive vibe ,” Connot said . “ All of our sports are aligned with each other and what our vision is for our athletic program and what we want for Brownsboro to be like . I am really excited not just about the football program but what we have going on over here .”
