East Texas Arboretum
Almost 32 years ago , an old truck farm was purchased and the East Texas Arboretum & Botanical Society was founded by six people living in Athens who were inspired by the Dallas Arboretum .
With over 100 acres representing a multitude of trees , native plants and flowers , and approximately 3.5 miles of trails connected by four bridges , the Arboretum is a hidden gem in Athens .
In addition to the trails , there is a children ’ s area , Cain Garden in the forest , Ruby Key Garden , Dream Garden , historic Wofford House circa 1850 , historic free-standing iron jailhouse built of Carnegie steel and iron , a reproduction of a one-room schoolhouse , and more .
There is also a large room in the Women ’ s Building that can be used for luncheons and events . One sight to see is the Veteran ’ s Wall which is dedicated to all veterans , living and deceased , who were enlisted or native to Henderson County .
The majority of visitors to the Arboretum choose it because it is off the beaten path with pet-friendly paths and beautiful nature trails . The current “ claim to fame ” is the Bog located in the trails portion of the Arboretum which is the only one in East Texas and is under the supervision of Texas Parks and Wildlife .
There are many volunteers and members of the Arboretum Board that continue to help the Arboretum stay open and well-maintained . However , they are always in need of more volunteers , even if just for an hour once in a while .
There are a variety of opportunities for “ Friends of the Arboretum ” including “ Wine-ing over Weeds ” at the Wofford House and other various ways that the community can help this beautiful property stay a treasure .
Stay up-to-date with current events and future events like the “ Fire Lane Brigade ” which will happen in 2023 on Facebook @ EastTexasArborteum . This is a once every ten year event when the Texas Parks and Wildlife will conduct a burning of the Bog in order to restore the typical vegetation .
