Dr James Kenneth Mackenzie, b. 14 June 1920 In or about 2006, Old Boy volunteers John Smith (SC 1950-54) and Gary Spears Day (born 20 February 1935, SC 1948-53, died 24 April 2015), under the direction of then-Archivist, Dr Jim Mitchell, (SC 1957-64) began putting together biographical files from the masses of material stored in the Archives. Gary sorted the material, John created the file with a name and date of creation, and Gary put identifying stickers on it. Soon after they began this work, the Archives at the rear of 2 Morrison Street were extended, and compactuses installed to provide storage superior to that which existed. Files were, and are, named after consulting the Mishura biographical FileMaker Pro database, which currently has over 38,000 entries on Scotch boys, Old Boys, staff, council members, benefactors, and others connected in some way with Scotch. Other volunteers involved with this process have included Bill McNaughton (SC 1949-54), Ian Munro (SC 1945-49), Harry Bloch (SC 1947-54), Ian Kerr (SC 1957-61) and Elizabeth Douglas. In 2007 approximately 500 files were being made every three months. In May 2011, a total of 6991 had been made, which was then 20 per cent of the database. The introduction of a label printer in 2012 hastened progress, and on 1 August 2017 John Smith fittingly made the 25,000th biographical file, for Edward Lesh (born 19 March 1907, SC 1918-23, died 22 December 1985). Bill McNaughton (left) and John Smith are holding this file in the photograph above. The volunteers are a valuable part of the Archives, and deserve the Scotch Family’s thanks for their time in helping organise, preserve, and increase our knowledge of those who have contributed to the story of Scotch. 24.
