A Toast to
Scotch College
by Andrew Sinclair (’80), for the Scotch Family
Adelaide branch dinner
I want to recall our days wearing cardinal, gold and blue,
And remind us of phrases that bind us, like glue.
A plot in Hawthorn Victoria – to us it means loads,
Bounded by Morrison Street, Glenferrie and Callantina Roads.
Where ‘sometimes in your dreams you’ll hear a deepening roar’,
We’re Scotch Collegians all – to the very core!
We’ve got our own memories from what was founded in 1851,
Your teachers, sport, music, art – if like mine, t’was all fun.
Powerful is the School motto – ‘Deo Patriae Litteris’,
It means for God, Country and Learning, but to rhyme would be
. . . [long pause] awkward.
So I trust that ‘scenes long past will rise up to meet you’,
Like the Mem Hall, Quadrangle and Main Oval do for me too.

Here’s to Scotch College – from Adelaide, nowhere near us,
Yet we all agree ‘Thou best of schools and dearest’.
So ‘gladly now our glass we raise’. To Scotch
