OSCA Annual Dinner: fun, food and friendship
What a great night of fun, superb food and warm friendship we had at the 2017 OSCA Annual Dinner!
More than 420 Old Boys and guests were there, and for the first time in 25 years the guest of honour was an Old Scotch Collegian: John(‘ Dr Turf’) Rothfield(’ 73). There was a lot of laughter during his very funny account of his school days, his encounters with teachers, and his passion for the Sport of Kings. Master of ceremonies, Dougal Beatty(’ 03), conducted the‘ Calling of the Years’, with the oldest Old Boy present – Ken Bethell(’ 37) – eventually standing alone to sustained applause. Sadly, it was to be Ken’ s final OSCA Annual
Dinner: he died just nine days after the dinner, on 4 June.
OSCA President Doug Lording(’ 64), officially welcomed all present and proposed the toast to the school, referring to the 2017 dinner’ s theme –‘ Celebrating OSCA Generations’. Will Fowles(’ 96) energetically performed the Haggis Ceremony, and OSCA Chaplain Graham Bradbeer’ s grace was appropriately based on the significance of generations in the Bible and in life. Loch Lomond and the other school songs rattled the Leonda rafters at the dinner, as they were sung with great gusto under Scotch Director of Music, John Ferguson’ s baton.
School Principal Tom Batty thanked Old Boys for what they have done for the school over the generations and their continued support of the school.
