A life of enterprise: of
service and purpose for
the greater good
In late July, I had the privilege of
attending an address by Mr Noel
Pearson, in which he prosecuted
his case for constitutional reform. In
offering the three bastions of political
influence as conservatism, liberalism
and socialism, Mr Pearson stressed his
view that all three need to be present to
form sustainable policy: conservatism
to ensure the continuity of structures,
institutions and language that provide
a landscape in which people can
engage with a degree of confidence
and certainty; liberalism for the personal

ambition and enterprise that fuel wealth
creation and economic growth; and,
socialism to afford state protection for
those who are left behind, neglected or
discarded by the established order of
things and freedom of the market.
Mr Pearson went on to weave this
triad into a convincing three-part epic
history of Australia. As he did so, my
mind continued to toy with the similarity
between Mr Pearson’s three-headed
dragon and that which is directing our
thoughts when preparing boys best for
the challenges and opportunities of their
time.
In such work, for conservatism read
values and traditions, for liberalism read
economic enterprise and for socialism
read social enterprise.
In a time of instant and ubiquitous
information, judgement is the primary
attribute, and it is best forged on beliefs,
principles and values that have stood the
test of time.
