Senior School
Scotch College completed a very
successful campaign at the Australian Rowing
Championships, winning all three of the
schoolboy sweep events – the Barrington Cup
for schoolboy eights, the schoolboy four and the
schoolboy under 17 eight. This is the first time a
single school has won these three events at an
Australian Championships. Every single Scotch
rower – all 25 athletes – won an Australian Rowing
Championships gold medal.
In their heat of the school eight, the Scotch
crew was soundly beaten by the Shore School.
Adding to the discomfort of this performance was
ill health, which ran through the crew throughout
the regatta.
In the final, Southport School led the field out
of the start, including the fastest qualifier, Shore. At
the 500m mark, Southport was 0.73 of a second,
or around one-third of a length, in the lead. Scotch,
Shore, Melbourne Grammar School, Shore’s
second eight and Geelong Grammar School were
within a second or approximately a third of a length
of each other.
At 1000m, Scotch had built a narrow lead
of two to three metres over Shore, Melbourne
Grammar and Southport. Through the third 500m
Scotch held on to around a quarter of a length
lead, absorbing a Shore surge that momentarily
took back a seat and reduced the margin to a
canvas. Scotch maintained a quarter of a length
lead (under a second) until the 1700m mark, when
they pushed out to one third of a boat length
ahead of Shore, extending this to three-quarters of
a length at around 1850m.
Scotch crossed the line in 5.51.62, 2.97
seconds (just under a length) ahead of Shore, with
Melbourne Grammar and Geelong College dead
heating for third place, 2.71 seconds, or around
three-quarters of a length behind. Scotch’s victory
adds to recent Australian titles in 2008 (a win that
broke a 30-year drought for Scotch) as well as in
2010, 2012 and 2013.
The 2017 Scotch 1st VIII was Harry Gill (cox),
Lachie Murchie (stroke), Angus Emmett (7),
Thomas Macky (6), Charlie Miller (5), Marcus
Emmett (4), Mark Russell (3), Max Cooper (2),
Harry Isles (bow), Tom Woodruff was the Coach.
The 2nd VIII competed in the under 19 eight
and schoolboy four events. Having gained valuable
experience from the preliminary under 19 race, the
crew set up the final by establishing a length lead
by the 1100m mark. The crew rowed strongly to
finish a length ahead of Toowong Rowing Club,
with St Peter’s College three-quarters of a length
further behind in third place.
The 2nd VIII also raced in two fours, with both
crews qualifying for the A final of the schoolboy

four from a field of 22 crews. In the final of the
schoolboy four, the crew, coxed by Lachie
Phillips and consisting of the bow four, performed
exceptionally to win the event. Stroked by
Benjamin Clarke, Scotch built a two second lead
in the second 500m and held off a determined
St Augustine’s College crew to win the Australian
school four title. This was the first win in this event
since 2011 for Scotch. The national school four
champions were Lachie Phillips (cox), Ben Clarke
(stroke), Harrison Miller (3), Patrick Butcher (2),
Rainer Gertis (bow).
The other Scotch four, the stern four, also raced
well to finish third and hit the line in a very tight
finish, 0.38 of a second ahead of fourth-placed
Melbourne High School, who were 0.03 of a
second ahead of St Patrick’s, fifth.
The 2017 Scotch 2nd VIII was Archie Gill (cox),
Teddy Webster (stroke), Tim Nothnagel (7), Louis
Le Deux (6), Rupert Baxter (5), Benjamin Clarke (4),
Harrison Miller (3), Patrick Butcher (2) and Rainer
Gertis (bow). Will Bartley (‘01) and James Murray
(‘15) were the Coaches.
The 10A crew competed in the regatta’s under
19 eight and under 17 eight events. In the under
19 eight race, the crew raced strongly to finish
seventh. In the under 17 eight preliminary race
and final the crew established a large lead by the
1000m mark, and held this strong advantage to
win the final by 2.81 seconds, or around a length,
from Trinity College (Perth). This was the sixth win
in this event for Scotch in the past nine years, and
the sixth win in eight starts (as a Scotch crew was
not able to compete in 2016).
The 2017 Scotch 10A/under 17 VIII was
William Smith (cox), James Scott (stroke), Marcus
Cameron (7), Tom McPhail (6), William Dixon (5),
Fraser Miscamble (4), Jack Cameron (3), Angus
Permezel (2) and John Kilroe-Smith (bow). Oliver
Dutton was the Coach.
