Scotch boys help to commemorate a great life
Scotch boys played prominent roles in the
Sir John Monash Commemorative Service, held
in the Legislative Assembly of the Parliament of
Victoria on 11 August. This is an annual service
to commemorate the life of Scotch’s most
esteemed Old Boy, General Sir John Monash
(1881).
It’s not a first for Scotch: our boys have been
a regular and important part of this service. This
year, the Cadet Unit CUO, Anthony Shorten,
and the Military Band Drum Major, WO2 Duncan
Robertson (both in Year 12), read excerpts from
letters and diaries about how the troops spent
‘Anzac Day’ in 1916, on the first anniversary of
the Gallipoli Landing. RSM WO1 Angus Currie
(Year 12) read the Ode to the Fallen, Piper Charlie
Cooper played Highland Cathedral and John
Athan played The Last Post.
An Old Boy from the Class of 1956 was
present at the service, and made the following
observations:
‘Yesterday I had the pleasure to attend
Queen’s Hall and the Legislative Assembly,
Spring Street, on the annual occasion of the Sir
John Monash Commemorative Service, at which
five boys from school performed formal tasks
during the ceremony.
‘The Last Post, etc., played by John Athan,
was the best I have heard across my lengthy
career. In addition, relevant performances by
Piper Charlie Cooper, RSM WO1 Angus Currie,
plus letter readings (CUO Anthony Shorten
and WO2 Duncan Robertson) all enhanced
the reputation of Scotch College within our
community. Please convey congratulations
on their high standards and thanks to each
participant.’
The school and the Cadet Unit are rightly
proud of these five boys. Well done to them all!
