A memorable music service program As part of the school Immersion Program, and previously part of the Services Program, many musical boys at Scotch participate in the Aged Care service. Our music service includes many small chamber groups, each playing a unique repertoire to an elderly audience in the comfort of their nursing homes. The boys are split into string, vocal and wind chamber groups, with each group visiting a different aged care facility. At each facility we perform a variety of pieces well known to many of the residents. After each concert we stay to talk with the residents over some biscuits and tea. Occasionally we even get to meet retired world-class musicians, such as Nelson Cooke AM, a former principal cellist with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This service is a great opportunity for the boys to improve on their chamber playing skills, while playing pieces they enjoy for an appreciative audience. It allows us to strengthen chamber music skills such as listening and communication, and to be adaptable and flexible to deal with the ever present counting errors that occur during a performance. Regardless of the level of each student, every boy who participates in this service has come out the other side a better musician. Those who benefit from the boys’ hard work are always impressed by the quality of music and are always eager to have the boys back, even just ABOVE: BOYS PERFORMING AT AGED CARE CENTRES IN MELBOURNE. to have a chat. A fireplace, hearty conversation and amazing music all contribute to an overall memorable and enjoyable experience for both the boys and the residents.
