Enjoyable EMG lunch ends 2016 in style A large gathering of 240 members of the East Melbourne Glen Chapter and guests filled the Boarders’ Dining Room with laughter, fun and plenty of camaraderie on 16 December 2016, at the EMG Christmas Luncheon. The lunch was preceded by convivial drinks out on the lawn in front of the dining room. In an entertaining address, guest speaker, OSCA President Doug Lording (‘64), updated those present with news of the exciting developments taking place on the Scotch campus, such as the new Design and Technology Cube. He also spoke about OSCA’s year, and what was in store for the Association in 2017. There was a wonderfully happy vibe in the dining room, with everyone enjoying the delicious lunch and appreciating the company of their EMG friends. Anniversary celebrations for the Hewsons and Smiths Saturday 10 December 2016 was a day to remember for two couples whose marriages, at that date, spanned more than 139 years in total. Verna and Don Hewson (‘38) and Greta and Lionel Smith (‘34) returned to the Littlejohn Memorial Chapel at Scotch, the scene of their marriages in the 1940s. Lionel and Greta were celebrating their 69th anniversary that very day. They were married in the Chapel on 10 December 1947. Verna and Don had already passed that milestone: they were married in the Chapel on 2 October 1946. It was a nostalgic and very happy occasion for the two couples. While in the Chapel they received warm congratulations and a blessing from OSCA Chaplain, the Rev Graham Bradbeer, and then walked down the aisle as couples, just as they had done so many years before. Emerging in the sunshine, they gazed out on a school that was very much changed from the one Don and Lionel knew as 1930s schoolboys. Don, a retired GP and a former VFL footballer with Melbourne, and Verna live independently in Balwyn, and enjoy travelling and an active social life. Their sons Drew (‘64), Neil (‘67) and Ian (‘69) all attended Scotch. Lionel is a retired manager. He enlisted in the AIF during World War II, reaching the rank of Warrant Officer, Class 2, and serving in Palestine, Syria, Lebanon and Papua New Guinea on the Kokoda Trail. Lionel and Greta now live at Rosebud. www.scotch.vic.edu.au Great Scot 51
